Environmental Ethics Syllabus Project Overview

Published research in environmental philosophy and ethics has increased exponentially in the two decades since the field first emerged, as such, in the mid-nineteen seventies, as documented in the ISEE bibliography, Course offerings in environmental philosophy and ethics probably proliferated at a similar pace. But evidence does not exist to show that they have in fact. All that exists is anecdotal evidence. The Syllabus Project was created in 1988 to document course offerings in environmental philosophy and ethics, to provide a resource for others in the field, and to help those new to the field develop courses in environmental ethics and philosophy.

The purpose of the Environmental Ethics Syllabus Project is to identify all the courses in environmental philosophy and ethics at every institution of higher learning--from two-year community colleges to four-year state universities to private liberal arts colleges and universities to master's- and doctorate-granting universities all around the world--who teaches them, what is being taught, and what texts are used.

As an on-line serial publication, the Environmental Ethics Syllabus Project provides a variety of ways of viewing course information in environmental ethics and philosophy. Information is arranged by date of addition, (issue and volume), geographically by Region, and alphabetically by Course, Instructor, and School, and there is a related resource on frequently used textbooks and books in environmental philosophy.

The simplest way to gather information is to ask each person teaching such a course to send a copy of the syllabus. The Syllabus Project assembles basic information, such as:

The history of the Environmental Ethics Syllabus Project began in 1996 when Robert Hood, then a graduate student in philosophy at Bowling Green State University, and currently Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Middle Tennessee State University, created a web page listing environmental ethics syllabi. The project would not be possible without the generous donations of time and information from all the people who have contributed their course syllabi and their suggestions. The project has benefited from helpful advice from Eugene C. Hargrove, editor of Environmental Ethics and Director of the Center for Environmental Philosophy, and J. Baird Callicott, Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Texas (and who taught the first course in environmental philosophy in 1971 when he was at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens-Point). The Syllabus Project has existed continuously since 1996, hosted first at Bowling Green State University, and currently at Middle Tennessee State University.
